How To Get A Motorcycle License

Do you want to ride? Do you dream of having the wind in your face when riding a motorcycle but don’t know how to fulfill that dream?

Anyone over the age of 16 can add a motorcycle endorsement to a current Class G, D, or Commercial Drivers License.

Basic skills written test and a skills course test riding the motorcycle are required to have the Class M added to your license. Applicants for a Class M license are encouraged to view a safety presentation before completing the application process. Material from the presentation may be on the written test.

Motorcycle Training Schools (approved) offer many benefits including the endorsement when completed. ADOT will need proof of completing the professional training class to complete the application to add the Class M to your current driver’s license. No additional testing is required to waive the Class M endorsement for motorcycles. You may also have benefits to your insurance.

Written Tests

When applying for your first Arizona driver’s license or instruction permit with a motorcycle endorsement, you must pass a written motorcycle test based on the information contained in the Motorcycle Operator Manual, and a separate driver’s license test based on the information in the Driver License Manual. One application fee allows you three attempts to pass the tests in a 12-month period.

Both the driver’s license and motorcycle examinations are available in English and Spanish. If you cannot read English or Spanish well enough to take a written test, arrangements can be made for an oral examination. If you need an interpreter, you must provide one.

If you are renewing an Arizona license, you may have to take the written test.

The motorcycle skills test is a 10- to 15-minute demonstration of your riding ability that consists of performing maneuvers on an off-street, closed track as described in the following instructions. If you test with a 100cc / 7HP or less motorcycle, you will receive a “2” restriction. You must test with a motorcycle greater than 100cc / 7HP to obtain an unrestricted license.

Younger Drivers

Ages 16 -17 have the same requirements as 18 years and older, except the applicant must have their parents’ approval again for the endorsement, just like the Drivers License requirement. The applicant must have held both an Arizona graduated instruction permit and an Arizona motorcycle instruction permit for at least six months. The permits must be valid at the time of application. An applicant must also have satisfactorily completed both a graduated and a motorcycle driver education program approved by MVD or the parent or guardian must certify in writing that the applicant has completed at least 30 hours of motorcycle riding practice.
